The latest release in the rich TDK series of DVD recordings from the prestigious Opéra National de Paris is a production of Sergei Prokofiev’s wonderful surrealist fairy-tale opera The Love for Three Oranges. This is the opera that was played all over the world long before Prokofiev’s other mature works became well known. The opera’s fantastic story is particularly well loved, and the famous march, which exists in many arrangements and has been widely used as a symphonic concert piece. Staged in the large Opéra Bastille, it is a colourful theatrical feast, directed by Gilbert Deflo. Conducted by 20th century specialist Sylvain Cambreling and sung in the original French version by superb singer-actors, this production presents a stage performance set in perfect harmony with Prokofiev’s inventive music.
Stage director Gilbert Deflo, who worked with Georgio Strehler at the Piccalo Teatro in Milan and studied the Italian Commedia dell’arte, brings the absurd story to life with wonderful creativity. Carlo Gozzi’s original 18th Century play L’amore delle tre Melarance uses characters from the Commedia del Arte and incorporates fairy tale elements into the old theatre form to create popular theatre. This mixture attracted Prokofiev as it provided for a spectacle. He looked for stylised characters, pure entertainment, speed, rhythm and power, and he found melodic gestures and instrumental colours to match the characters or visual images.
Deflo’s staging takes up this spirit. His production is pure theatre. His characters employ body language derived from the Commedia dell’arte and he uses elements of popular theatre. The stage itself reminds us of a circus, where illusions are deliberately destroyed by, for example, incorporating the stagehands into the action and by placing the chorus on both sides of the pit so that the various factions can easily intervene on stage.
As Prokofiev took a great interest in the cinema – he composed famous scores for Eisenstein’s Alexander Nevsky and Ivan the Terrible – elements of this new narrative form can also be found in the libretto, for example in entries and exits which completely defy logic or unity of space and time. Deflo also uses cinematographic devices in his stage production. The most obvious and wonderfully timed of these is the final chase when the traitors are exposed.
The story develops around a young prince, who suffers from seemingly incurable melancholy and hypochondria. The doctors prescribe laughter and the court jester Truffaldino is summoned to make him laugh. This eventually happens at the expense of the witch Fata Morgana – played by Béatrice Uria-Monzon, who imbues the evil character with dramatic and vocal malice. She immediately curses the Prince to wander the earth in search of the three oranges, each of which contains a princess. The Prince is not only a hypochondriac but suffers from lack of human warmth and love. He will mature in the course of his quest for the three oranges, discover true love and turn into a worthy successor to his father the King. To add more Commedia dell’arte elements, Gilbert Deflo transforms the Prince into a Pierrot and endows him with the same melancholy as we experienced in Jean-Louis Barrault’s stunning performance in Les enfants du paradis. Charles Workman, who sings the Prince in this production, employs movements, which remind us of famous mimes. No wonder that the third Princess, appears as Colombine from the Commedia dell’arte and declares that her prince has been long awaited. In this key scene Deflo lets the Prince open the third orange with his whole body and discover love. Magic comes into play when Ninetta is about to die from thirst, and a blue silk lake appears only to be transformed later into night sky sheltering the lovers.
Truffaldino, the court jester, is also shown as a Commedia dell’arte figure with his traditional prop, a kind of baton or slapstick. He wears a mask and can therefore not play with facial expressions. He has to move his body in such a way that the audience understands what he is up to. Hereby Deflo reinforces the Commedia dell’arte character of the production and Barry Banks meets this challenge with perfection. Smeraldina, the witch Fata Morgana’s black servant also, appears in a Colombine costume when she is ordered by the witch to replace Ninetta who has been transformed into a rat. Smeraldina’s dress is black, a simple metaphor for evil. The King’s niece, Clarissa, and the Prime Minister Leandro come straight out of comic strips and silent films. They are quickly recognised as completely superficial figures. The chorus of "Ridiculous People" represents the audience of the play and intervenes all along, partly to express differing opinions about the plot, partly to help in critical situations, for example when Princess Ninetta is about to die of thirst or when the witch Fata Morgana tries to prevent a happy end.
The DVD contains an informative essay on the opera by Reiner E. Moritz, who also contributed the bonus film, a documentary by the telling name of “How to fall in love with three oranges” in which interviews with singers, conductor and director explain the music, the staging and their own approach to the roles. | |
